TRIGGER WARNING: The Play About the Baby or KNOCK ME UP: The Last Time He Hit Me

Description:

Performing artist Diana Shortez brings her newest original solo work to The Dragonfly, November  23-25.

TRIGGER WARNING: The Play About the Baby
or KNOCK ME UP: The Last Time He Hit Me is a musical-dramedy about the power and intensity of the voice to transform grief and rage into a felt sense of freedom and forgiveness.

TRIGGER WARNING is a deeply personal account of living within an abusive, alcoholic relationship and suffering two miscarriages in the process. It is a trenchant re-telling of a very dark time in the author-performer's life and a glimpse into the path one woman has chosen to bring about forgiveness, healing and freedom from suffering: the path of TruthTelling.

Once called "the Garbo of New Orleans performance art" by Times-Picayune theatre critic David Cuthbert, Ms. Shortez is known for creating elaborate installations on stage, often leaving the audience feeling as if they have witnessed "a spiritual strip-tease". With this newest solo work, Shortez takes a bold departure from her standard fare of relying heavily on costumes and found objects to create vivid narratives which breathe life into the often forgotten legacies of significant literary and historical figures.

With TRIGGER WARNING she offers up a simple piece stylistically. Here we have a lyric choreo-poem drawn from the combined traditions of Spalding Gray and Ntozake Shange. Delivered on a sparsely set stage with very few props and minimal movement, Ms. Shortez uses her voice to tell an intensely moving story.

TRIGGER WARNING: The Play About the Baby
or KNOCK ME UP: The Last Time He Hit Me is an auto-performance-biography about loss, grief, rage, violence, addiction, suffering, and the freedom and forgiveness found through telling the Truth about abuse. It is a particularly timely piece, as women's shared experiences - often hidden even from one another by ancient layers of fear and shame - are now finding their way into the light, across both cultures and continents. TRIGGER WARNING speaks to the Universal Truth that speaking the Truth has the potential to bring about Universal Healing.
